Menopause is the beginning of a new chapter
Menopause is a natural stage in a woman’s life, but it does not happen overnight, the transition usually begins with perimenopause, which can start several years before the final period.
During perimenopause, oestrogen and progesterone levels begin to change and fluctuate, periods may become irregular, and women may notice changes in their sleep, mood, energy, weight, concentration, body temperature or general sense of wellbeing. Every woman’s experience is different, some notice only a few changes, while others experience symptoms that significantly affect their daily lives.
Menopause itself is one point in this transition, and it is reached when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months. The years that follow are called postmenopause.
Although this is a natural biological process, natural does not always mean easy. Understanding what is happening, learning to recognise the body’s changing needs and finding the right support can make this stage feel less confusing and overwhelming.

It can also help to look at menopause as more than the end of the reproductive years, it is the beginning of a different phase of womanhood. Older women have always carried an important kind of knowledge and it is not only knowledge learned from books, but wisdom gained through experience. They have lived through change, loss, relationships, work, family responsibilities, difficult decisions and new beginnings, and they often recognise patterns more clearly, understand their own boundaries better and have valuable insight to share with younger generations.
A woman’s value does not disappear when her periods stop, because her body is changing, but her experience, understanding, confidence and ability to contribute continue to grow. Menopause can include uncomfortable symptoms, uncertainty and emotional adjustment, while also opening the way to greater self-knowledge and a clearer sense of what truly matters.
This new chapter may ask for a gentler pace, more rest, better nourishment, stronger boundaries and a deeper relationship with your own body, it is about learning how to support the new woman you are becoming.
