Menopause
THE MENOPAUSE JOURNEY
The point that marks the end of menstruation
Menopause is reached after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, provided there is no other medical explanation and you are not using hormonal contraception that affects bleeding.
It marks the end of the reproductive phase and the transition into postmenopause.

What happens in your body?
Ovarian activity significantly decreases, ovulation stops, oestrogen and progesterone levels remain lower and FSH levels usually rise. The body adjusts to a new hormonal environment, which can affect many systems, including bone, heart, brain and metabolism.

Typical age
Natural menopause most commonly occurs between 45 and 55, with the average age in the UK around 51.
